Garbage Collection Guidelines

Use only city-issued trash carts and barrels to place your garbage at the curbside according to the rules and regulations of the Town of Milton. Your garbage cart will be serviced once a week based on your location. To ensure your garbage is collected, place your trash cart at the curbside by 7 AM on your scheduled collection day. Make sure to confirm your service day before placing your cart at the curbside, as failure to do so may result in fines.

The Public Works Department has listed rules that residents must follow when placing carts at the curbside:

  • Leave adequate space around your cart so the automatic trash collection truck’s arms can operate.
  • Avoid blocking sidewalks to allow clear paths for disabled individuals and those with strollers.
  • Leave an 18-inch distance from static obstacles such as poles, mailboxes, and parked cars.

Household trash, including kitchen waste, can cause residue buildup in trash carts. To prevent this, bag all trash in plastic bags before placing it in your cart. If you are using a non-city-issued trash barrel, ensure it is labeled with a trash sticker for easy recognition. Once your trash is collected, remove your cart within 24 hours of your scheduled collection day.

Milton Recycling Guidelines

According to Town of Milton regulations, recycling collection occurs on the same day as regular garbage collection and is provided once a week. Set your cart at the curbside by 7 AM along with your regular garbage cart. Recycling is essential for reducing waste and conserving natural resources, so residents are encouraged to participate actively.

Acceptable recycling materials include:

  • Paper, mixed papers, newspapers, mail
  • Plastic bottles and containers (labeled with numbers 1 to 7)
  • Aluminum cans, tin boxes, food boxes, and cans

Place only clean, dry, and empty materials in the recycling cart, and use only closed-lid carts to reduce litter. Avoid placing irrelevant materials in your recycling cart, as they will not be collected.

Yard Collections Guidelines

Residents must place yard waste at the curbside by 7 AM. Yard waste is collected on the 17th week of the year, on the same day as your trash and recycling collection. Prepare yard waste properly to ensure it is collected, as unprepared waste will not be picked up.

According to the Public Works Department, only 40 pounds of yard waste is allowed per collection. Yard waste such as tree branches and stems must be cut to lengths of 6 inches and a diameter of 3 inches. Tie these branches into bundles before placing them at the curbside. Grass clippings, tree leaves, and smaller yard waste materials should be placed in compostable bags and labeled for easy identification by the collection crew. Once yard waste is collected, it is the resident’s responsibility to clean any remaining debris from the street.

Bulk Waste Collections

Bulk waste includes oversized items that cannot fit into regular trash carts, such as broken furniture, mattresses, and home appliances. Bulk waste is collected every Tuesday. Place all bulk trash at the curbside by 7 AM on Tuesday to ensure collection, positioning it at the edge of the street in front of your property.

Holidays Collection Schedule

The Town of Milton observes certain holidays each year, which affect regular trash collection services. During these holidays, trash collection will be delayed by one day. For example, if the holiday falls on a Monday, trash will be collected on Tuesday, and this one-day delay will continue for the entire week.
