Can You Recycle Aerosol Cans?
It depends
Empty cans: usually yes. Anything left inside: hazardous
Why
Empty aerosol cans are just steel or aluminum and most programs take them. Pressurized or partly full cans can explode in compactors and count as hazardous waste.
How to dispose of aerosol cans
- Use up the contents completely until no spray comes out
- Leave the can intact — never puncture it
- Recycle empty cans curbside if your program lists them; plastic caps off
- Partly full cans go to household hazardous waste
Greener option
Pump sprays and bar products avoid the pressurized can entirely.
♻️ Recycling rules vary by city and hauler — when in doubt, check your local program. You can look up your area on our trash & recycling schedules page.
