Can You Recycle Batteries (Household)?
No
Never curbside — drop off at a collection point
Why
Batteries, especially lithium-ion, cause fires in collection trucks and recycling facilities. They contain valuable and hazardous metals that need specialized recycling.
How to dispose of batteries (household)
- Take them to a battery drop-off — many hardware stores, libraries, and big-box retailers have bins
- Tape the terminals of lithium and 9V batteries before drop-off
- Check your county's household hazardous waste program for free collection events
Greener option
Switch to rechargeable batteries to cut down the volume you have to dispose of.
♻️ Recycling rules vary by city and hauler — when in doubt, check your local program. You can look up your area on our trash & recycling schedules page.
