Can You Recycle Books?
It depends
Paperbacks yes, hardcovers need the cover removed
Why
Paperback books are pure paper and recycle fine. Hardcover bindings contain glue, board, and sometimes cloth that paper mills reject.
How to dispose of books
- Donate readable books first — libraries, thrift stores, little free libraries
- Paperbacks: recycle whole
- Hardcovers: tear out the pages and recycle them; trash the cover
- Moldy or wet books go in the trash
Greener option
Library donation sales give books a second life and fund programs.
♻️ Recycling rules vary by city and hauler — when in doubt, check your local program. You can look up your area on our trash & recycling schedules page.
