Can You Recycle Crayons?
No
Not recyclable curbside — mail-in programs exist
Why
Crayons are wax, which no recycling facility processes. Dedicated nonprofits melt donated crayons into new ones for hospitals and schools.
How to dispose of crayons
- Mail broken crayons to a crayon-recycling nonprofit
- Or melt them at home into fun multicolor crayons (muffin tin, low oven)
- Otherwise they go in the trash
Greener option
Melting old crayons into new shapes is a great kids' project.
♻️ Recycling rules vary by city and hauler — when in doubt, check your local program. You can look up your area on our trash & recycling schedules page.
