Can You Recycle K-Cups & Coffee Pods?
It depends
Only if separated, and only in some areas
Why
Newer K-Cups are #5 polypropylene, which some programs accept — but only if you peel the foil lid and dump the grounds. Many facilities still screen out anything pod-sized.
How to dispose of k-cups & coffee pods
- Peel off the foil lid (trash) and empty the grounds (compost)
- Recycle the empty #5 cup only if your program accepts small #5 plastics
- When in doubt, trash it — full pods contaminate recycling
Greener option
A refillable pod cuts the waste to zero and pays for itself fast.
♻️ Recycling rules vary by city and hauler — when in doubt, check your local program. You can look up your area on our trash & recycling schedules page.
