Can You Recycle Shredded Paper?
It depends
Often not accepted loose — check locally
Why
Shredded paper is too small for sorting screens; it falls through and contaminates glass loads. Some programs accept it bagged in paper, many do not.
How to dispose of shredded paper
- Check your local rules first
- If accepted, contain it in a stapled paper bag — never loose or in plastic bags
- Otherwise, compost it or use it as packing material
Greener option
Shredded paper is excellent brown material for compost bins and great for shipping fragile items.
♻️ Recycling rules vary by city and hauler — when in doubt, check your local program. You can look up your area on our trash & recycling schedules page.
