Once you identify your collection day, prepare your trash and place it at the curbside for pickup. Residents will receive either 96-gallon or 48-gallon trash carts. Place all trash in city-issued trash carts and position the cart at the curbside by 6 AM on your collection day.

When placing trash carts at the curbside, ensure they are in visible, accessible locations for easy pickup. The cart’s lid should face the front of the street. Place trash in plastic bags before putting it in the cart to minimize leakage and spillage. Leave sufficient space around the cart to allow the automated truck’s hydraulic arm to operate efficiently, maintaining at least 3 feet of clearance from other carts. Only closed-lid carts should be used. After collection, remove your cart as soon as possible.

Fort Wayne Recycling Schedule

Recycling collection services are provided every other week. To ensure proper disposal, place recyclables in a city-issued recycling cart at the curbside by 6 AM on the designated day. Do not use plastic bags for recycling; instead, place items loosely in the cart. Only clean, empty, and dry materials should be included. Avoid placing irrelevant or non-recyclable materials in the cart, as they will not be collected.

Acceptable recycling materials include plastic bottles and containers numbered 1 through 5 and 7, aluminum cans, foil, and baking trays, steel or tin cans, empty aerosol cans, glass bottles and jars (brown, green, or clear), office paper, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, chipboard, brown paper bags, aseptic containers, and juice or milk cartons.

Borrow a Bin

The City of Fort Wayne provides 50 recycling bins and trash bags to local organizations for various purposes, such as event trash collection. To borrow these bins, email [email protected] or fill out an online form. Residents must pick up the bins from their designated location and return them in the same condition, with a $20 cleaning fee.

Fort Wayne Bulk Item Collection Schedule

Bulk trash collection services are provided without appointments. Bulk items are collected two days after regular trash collection. For example, if your trash is collected on Monday, bulk items will be collected on Wednesday. If your trash collection day is Friday, bulk trash will be collected on Tuesday, as weekends are holidays.

Acceptable bulk items include furniture, mattresses/box springs (must be completely wrapped in plastic), and non-Freon appliances. If you have questions about bulk trash collection, call 311 for more information. Do not place irrelevant materials in the bulk trash pile.

Fort Wayne Yard Waste Schedule

Seasonal yard waste collection services are available from April 1 through December 31. To dispose of yard waste, check your schedule using the link above and place yard trash at the curbside by 7 AM on the scheduled day.

Follow the city’s yard waste preparation guidelines. Place tree leaves in compostable paper bags for collection. Residents can also take yard trash to the Biosolids Facility at 6202 Lake Avenue.

If your yard waste includes sticks, twigs, or branches, cut them into 4-foot lengths with a maximum diameter of 3 inches. Tie them into bundles before placing them at the curbside. If you use a different cart for yard waste, label it as “Yard Trash” to ensure the collection crew can identify it easily.
