Seattle Recycling Rules

The material you are giving for recycling must be empty, dry, and clean. Only put those items to recycling carts which are acceptable by the waste management authority of Seattle city such as paper, cardboards, plastic bottles, containers, tabs, glass bottles, and tins. Do not put plastic bags in recycling carts, place all recyclable material loose into the carts.

Missed collection in Seattle

If you come to know that your trash collection is missed, then you don’t worry because you can report it after 6:00 PM on your trash collection scheduled day or within a couple of business days of missed collection. Seattle Holidays Trash Schedule

The City of Seattle will observe 3 annual holidays that may affect your trash collection schedule. These holidays will delay  your trash collection by only one day. For example, if your normal trash collection day is Monday, then due to the annual holiday your trash will be collected on Tuesday.

Seattle Bulk Pickup Schedule

The Waste Management authority of Seattle city facilitates you with special pickup of bulk material such as old furnitures, home appliances that cannot be recycled. On your collection scheduled day, set out all material that you want to dispose of on time by 7AM.

Simply place all bulk material in a way that it does not block the sidewalk. Similarly  try to place all bulky items in a place which is easily accessible by trash collection vehicles.

Ban on garbage and electronics in garbage

Electronic products such as batteries contain harmful substances such as mercury, cadmium, lithium, lead or sometimes acid that  can cause fire when it goes indo landfill. In order to minimize the risk and to ensure the safety of waste collection staff, the government collects these items separately.

Residents having electronics material with them can request for special pick up services by filling an online form. Once you fill this form, staff will schedule a special pick up with the next regular collection day. Special pickup services will cost from 5$ to 36$ depending upon size of electronic products.

Hazardous waste items 

If you are having extra hazardous waste items, do not dispose of them along with regular trash instead try to give them to others who can use them. Otherwise bring all hazardous material you are having with you to the household hazardous waste collection site. This facility is free for Seattle residents.

There are 2 household hazardous collection sites in Seattle city, the one is North Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at 12550 Stone Avenue North, Seattle 98133. Waste management staff will be there to facilitate you on  Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday from 9:00AM – 5:00PM.

The other hazardous waste management site is South Household Hazardous Waste Facility  that is located at 8100 2nd Ave S, Seattle 98108. This site will facilitate you to dispose of hazardous material on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00AM – 5:00PM.

Seattle Extra Garbage

Seattle residents are required to pay additional fees for waste exceeding their regular garbage limit. Starting in April 2024, each extra bag, bundle, or 32-gallon container will cost $13.60, and there are penalties for overfilled containers with lids that wonā€™t close, so be careful. To avoid these extra charges, residents are encouraged to maximize their use of recycling and food waste bins.

If a home is unoccupied for 60 consecutive days, a reduced rate of $6.85 per month may be applied. Special rates for vacant or unlivable homes are available, and residents can contact Seattle Public Utilities to apply for these adjustments.
