Bin Collection Guidelines
Household bin collection services are provided once a week for South Norfolk residents. Set your bin out by 6:30 AM on your collection day. The council prefers that residents place their bins on the street the night before collection day. If you are unsure of your area’s location, check the local council’s website to identify your bin collection day according to your location and ensure weekly waste disposal.
South Norfolk Recycling
The South Norfolk City Council provides recycling collection services weekly, according to the South Norfolk Bin Collection schedule. Place your recycling bin at the curbside by 6:30 AM on designated days. Follow the rules and regulations when placing recycling waste at the curbside. Failure to comply may result in your bin not being collected.
- Place only clean, dry, and empty recycling material in the bin.
- Do not put leftover food into the recycling bin to reduce the risk of maggots and litter.
- Drop all recycling material loosely into the bin—do not use plastic bags, as they cause issues in the recycling process.
- Keep your bin dry by keeping the lid closed to prevent moisture.
Acceptable recycling materials include:
- Newspapers, magazines, and leaflets
- Packaging card and cardboard
- Wrapping paper (clean and without adhesive tape, ribbons, or glitter)
- Metal tins, cans, and foil
- Clean foil trays and containers
- Plastic containers
- Food and drink cartons
- Glass bottles (without lids) and glass jars
Avoid placing prohibited materials in your recycling bin, as these will not be collected.
Report Missed Bin Collections
If your bin is missed during collection, this could be due to several reasons, such as the bin not being placed out on time, not being accessible, or not having a lid. If this happens, don’t worry—you can report the issue to the South Norfolk District Council. Click the link below and fill out the complaint form to report a missed bin collection.
Residents should report missed bins within 48 hours of collection day. Bin collection trucks will not return for missed collections, so be sure to place your bin in a visible, accessible, and appropriate location to avoid this issue in the future.
Bulk Waste Collection
According to the South Norfolk District Council, acceptable bulk waste includes bathroom suites, kitchen cabinets, showers, doors, sheds, snooker tables, and fence panels. Bulk waste requires special handling, as it cannot fit into regular trash bins. Proper disposal of bulk waste is a significant concern for citizens.
If you have bulk waste and want to dispose of it, the South Norfolk District Council offers two options: you can either donate your items if they are in good condition or book an online pickup service. If your bulk waste is in good condition, consider donating it through Bingenie. If your bulk waste is broken, click the link below to book bulk pickup services.

Garden Waste Collection Services
South Norfolk Council provides weekly garden waste collection services. Place your brown garden waste bin at the curbside by 6:30 AM on your scheduled collection day. Residents must purchase a garden waste bin from the city council for £67 a year. If you have extra garden waste, pack it in compostable bags and label them as “garden waste” to ensure proper collection.
Acceptable garden waste includes:
- Hedge and shrub clippings (excluding invasive or toxic species such as Yew, Japanese Knotweed, Rhododendron, Ragwort, Hemlock, and Himalayan Balsam)
- Cut flowers and plant prunings
- Grass cuttings (not treated with Clopyralid or Aminopyralid weed killer)
- Small branches (4″ diameter or less), twigs, weeds, and leaves
