Residential Trash Collection Guidelines
Put all residential trash into black trash carts and place your residential trash carts outside by 7 AM on your collection day in Thornton. Place your carts in a way that their lids will open towards the front of the street.
Place your container at a distance of two feet from other carts and at least seven feet from parked cars and other static obstacles. Do not overfill your trash cart and place only closed-lidded carts outside.
Do not paint or deface your trash carts and you are not allowed to move trash carts from their assigned location. Bag all windblown debris and prevent all materials from sticking inside the trash carts. Once your trash gets collected, remove carts as soon as possible.
Solid Waste Fee Structure
Your solid waste charges will be added to your monthly utility bills. Currently, the solid waste collection fee is $17.50 per month. These charges are for only one black container, which is specific for solid waste collection. The waste management authority will charge extra for additional trash carts. The current rates of solid waste for Thornton are the following:
Container | Fee |
---|---|
One black container | $17.50 |
Two black containers | $22.00 |

Recycling Collection in Thornton
The city will provide recycling service once every two weeks. In order to ensure your recycling pickup, place all recyclable material outside by 7 AM on your recycling collection day along with residential trash for pickup.
Recyclable material includes paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, plastic containers, metal boxes, steel cans, metal containers, glass containers, and glass bottles.
Place only empty, clean, and dry material into recycling carts in order to reduce litter and odor. Place all materials loosely into recycling carts and do not put any plastic bag into it because plastic bags create problems at the recycling end.
