Garbage Collections
Regular garbage will be picked up once a week according to the Chesapeake Trash Schedule. Regular garbage includes ordinary household waste such as paper, food containers (flattened), unused food, and items used in food preparation. Put all trash into plastic bags before placing them in your regular trash container (blue container). Place your cart at the curbside by 7 AM on your scheduled collection day. Ensure that the container is placed at the edge of the street in front of your property. It is recommended to use only city-issued 32-gallon trash carts for curbside placement.
Make sure your cart is not damaged and that the lid is securely closed. If your trash cart lid is open and trash is spilling out, the collection crew will not service it, leading to missed trash collection. Avoid placing your cart near obstacles such as mailboxes, other carts, and poles, so the automatic trash collection truck can easily collect it. Roll your cart back as soon as possible after collection.
Recycling Collections
Chesapeake does not provide curbside recycling services. Residents are encouraged to bring all recyclable items to nearby drop-off stations. At these drop-off stations, residents will find two recycling carts: one for cardboard and paper, and the other for other recyclables. Click the link below to learn more about drop-off sites operating in the city under the Chesapeake Trash Schedule.

Acceptable recyclable items include plastics numbered 1 and 2 (shape does not matter, but they must have the recycling triangle with a 1 or 2), metal cans (aluminum, tin, steel), and mixed paper (newspaper, office paper, magazines, books, catalogs, mail). Do not place any irrelevant materials into the recycling cart; otherwise, the owner may be fined. Only bring clean, dry, and empty materials to the drop-off station.
Additionally, Chesapeake collects aluminum cans from the city, sells them, and donates the proceeds to the CAS Medical Fund to help cover surgeries and treatments for animals. Residents are encouraged to donate aluminum cans. Do not put recyclable items into plastic bags, as they are prohibited at drop-off stations.
Bulk Items Collections
Bulk trash refers to oversized items that cannot fit into a regular trash cart. If you have bulk materials and want to dispose of them, you must request bulk pickup services either through an online bulk collection request or by calling 757-382-2489. If you prefer to submit an online request, click the link below to access the form.
The Waste Management Division provides bulk collection services for residents of Chesapeake. Bulk trash includes broken furniture, mattresses, home appliances, and brush. Place your bulk trash pile in front of your property. Do not add construction debris or hazardous household materials to the pile, as they will not be collected. In your request, specify whether you are requesting bulk trash collection or yard collection. If you only request bulk trash pickup, the collection truck will only collect bulk items. If you also have brush or yard waste, make sure to mention that in your request to follow the Chesapeake Trash Schedule guidelines.
Holidays Trash Collections
Certain holidays observed by the city annually will affect the normal Chesapeake Trash Schedule. During these holidays, trash collection services will be delayed by one day. For instance, if a holiday falls on a Monday, trash collection will occur on Tuesday, and Tuesday’s collection will shift to Wednesday. This delay will continue throughout the week until Friday.
