Trash Collections

Place all trash into the town-provided cart and place a closed-lid cart at the curbside by 7 AM on your scheduled collection day. Residents are allowed to place up to 20 pounds of garbage at the curbside. If you have excess trash that cannot fit into the garbage cart, place all extra trash in city-approved blue bags at the curbside. You can buy these bags from retailers for $2.

Do not put leaves, yard waste, CRTs (TVs, computer monitors), demolition/construction materials, or bulk items such as furniture and appliances into refuse carts. You need to bring all these items to the town recycling and yard waste centers. Place your cart so that its lid faces the front of the street. Roll your cart back as soon as possible after collection.

Recycling Collection

Recycling services will be provided on the same day as your normal garbage collection. Paper will be collected every week, while containers such as bottles and plastic products will be collected every other week. The Department of Public Works will provide recycling carts of 14 and 18 gallons to hold all recycling products. Place your cart at the curbside by 7 AM on your collection day.

Acceptable recycling materials include glass containers, metal cans, plastics numbered 1-7, paper, cardboard (no larger than 3’ x 3’ and should be broken down), and newspapers. Place only empty, clean, and dry items into the cart. Do not put any plastic bags into the cart, as these disrupt the recycling process and cause problems.

Bulk Collection / Yard & Recycling Waste Center Information

Longmeadow will not provide curbside bulk collection facilities. Bulk trash includes broken furniture that cannot be donated, mattresses, and home appliances. If you have this type of trash material or any yard trash, you must bring it to the Yard and Recycling Waste Center. The Yard and Recycling Center is located at Pondside Road, adjacent to the old Department of Public Works yard (31 Pondside).

The operational hours of this center are 5 AM to 9 PM from Monday to Friday. You need a recycling center annual sticker to use this facility. Residents can buy these stickers online by filling out a form at the link below. Bring all bulk trash and yard waste safely to the designated places.

If you decide to bring yard waste to the recycling center, put all leaves, branches, and clippings into a bag and cut all branches into lengths of 6 feet. Tie all these branches into bundles and bring them to the recycling center. This facility is only available to residents of Longmeadow.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

The city also provides household hazardous waste disposal services to residents. Household hazardous materials include dangerous chemicals and harmful substances that residents cannot safely store at home. Examples include paint thinner, furniture and floor cleaners/polishes, spot remover, carpet and upholstery cleaner, glues and adhesives, lawn and garden supplies, and pool chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, algaecides, shock treatments, pH adjusting chemicals, chlorine tablets, medications, liquid chemicals, and rechargeable batteries.

If you want to dispose of this type of trash, bring it to the New England Disposal Technologies (NEDT) located at 190 East Main Street, Westfield. Their hours of operation are 9 AM to 4 PM from Monday to Wednesday and 9 AM to 1 PM on Saturday. This facility is only available to residents of Longmeadow.
