Household Trash Collection Time
Place all your residential trash into a green cart and place your cart at curbside by 7 AM on your designated collection day. Moreover, you may also place your cart by 3 PM a day before your collection. Household trash collection service will be provided once a week. Household trash includes food packaging, paper, and other household trash items.
Try to place your container on the street in front of your house. Moreover, place it in a visible place. Place your container in a way that its lid will face the front of the street. In order to ensure your trash is collected, place your container away from all obstacles such as parked vehicles, mailboxes, and poles. To prevent spillage of trash on the street, place only closed-lid carts outside.
What to Do if Your Collection Was Missed

Newport News Recycling Collection Schedule
If you are using a blue bin, then your recycling collection will be done every week, but if you are using a big blue cart, then it will be serviced every other week. Put all recyclable material into a blue cart and place it at curbside by 7 AM on your scheduled collection day.
You can get a recycling bin and recycling cart from City Office Depot, Home Depot, and Amazon as well. You will be charged almost $10 for these blue carts. In order to reduce litter and smell, place only empty, clean, and dry material into recycling carts.
Acceptable recycling materials include beverage and food cans, bottles, plastic jugs, jars and containers, paperboard items, cardboard, paper, and foil pans. Do not place any irrelevant material into the recycling cart; otherwise, your cart will not be serviced. Do not place any type of plastic bag into a recycling cart.
Newport News Bulk and Debris Collection
Bulk and debris collection service will be provided once every two weeks. To ensure your bulk and debris collection, place them along with your garbage cart at curbside on your scheduled collection day. First, your bulky items will be picked up; then, afterward, debris will be picked up. Do place them separately in the street.
Acceptable bulk items include furniture, mattresses, and debris created as a result of remodeling and repairing operations. Household appliances are also included. Normally, these services are provided every Wednesday, but this will be limited to the first 28 callers. So call immediately to get household appliances pick-up service first.
Place all bulk trash away from obstacles that could cause problems during the automatic pick-up process. These obstacles could be parked vehicles, mailboxes, and poles. If you place your bulk trash in hidden places, then it will not be serviced.
There should be a separate pile of yard waste from bulk trash. Put all debris and yard trash such as leaves and clippings into sealed transparent bags. Moreover, yard trash such as leaves, branches, and clippings are taken to the city compost facility where they are composted and ground into mulch.
The limit of bulk trash to be collected per residential collection day is 6 cubic yards. But if you have more trash, you can bring it to the recovery operations center. They will handle your trash without any extra charges.

Acceptable household hazardous waste materials include oil, paint, stains, wood sealers, thinner, solvent, rechargeable batteries, automotive products, lawn and garden products such as insecticides, weed killers, pesticides, fertilizer, and miscellaneous products like alkaline batteries and Ni-Cad batteries.
Bring all household trash on designated days to get rid of it. You are authorized to bring up to 75 pounds of solid and up to 5 gallons of liquid in each event. It is recommended to bring all materials in their original containers or properly labeled containers so that the waste management department can easily recognize them.
