Garbage Collections

Your residential garbage and kitchen trash will be collected twice a week. Place all regular trash into trash bags and then into carts. Set your trash cart at the curbside by 6 AM on your scheduled collection day. Regular trash includes empty kitchen wrappers, small household trash, and bathroom trash pails. Do not place yard or bulk trash in your regular trash cart; otherwise, it won’t be collected under the Yorktown Trash Schedule.

Ensure that your cart’s lid opens toward the street, with the wheels facing the back. Place your cart in a clean, obstacle-free space so that automatic collection trucks can easily collect it. Leave a clearance of at least 3 feet on both sides of the trash cart. Make sure the lid is closed after placing trash inside, as overfilled carts will not be serviced. Trash placed outside the cart won’t be collected, and fines may apply. Remove your cart as soon as possible after collection.

Recycling Collections

The town provides residents with dual-stream recycling service. Recycling trash is collected once a week, so place your cart at the curbside by 6 AM on your collection day as per the Yorktown Trash Schedule. Put recyclable materials loosely in the recycling cart.

Do not add plastic bags to your recycling cart, as they create problems in the recycling process. Recycling trash is collected by two separate trucks in one day, so do not mix paper with other recyclables. Place paper in a separate cart.

Acceptable recycling materials include plastic containers coded #1, #2, #3, #4, #5, #6, or #7, food and beverage cans, clean aluminum foil and trays, empty aerosol cans, paper, and cardboard. Irrelevant materials will cause your recycling cart to be left uncollected.

Report Missed Collection

If your trash cart is missed during collection, you can report it. To report missed collections for recycling or refuse, call (914) 739-4438 or AAA Carting at (914) 739-9527. Once reported, they will collect your trash on the next business day as per the Yorktown Trash Schedule.

Bulk Trash Collections

Bulk trash is collected according to the Yorktown Trash Schedule, so check the bulk collection schedule before placing bulk items at the curbside. Place your bulk trash at the curb by 6 AM on the scheduled collection day. Bulk trash includes broken furniture, mattresses, appliances, rugs, lamps, curtains, bicycles, and bags of small items.

Do not mix yard trash or construction debris with your bulk trash, as these materials are not accepted. If found, the crew will leave your bulk trash uncollected. For appliances such as refrigerators and freezers, the sanitation department charges $20 for their collection. It is the resident’s responsibility to remove any leftover ineligible material from the street after bulk trash collection.

For rugs, tie them into a 3-foot roll before placing them at the curbside. If you have an excessive amount of bulk trash, ensure it does not exceed a 9x3x3 area. Contact the sanitation department at (914) 245-4438 if you have more than the limit, as additional charges of around $60 may apply.

Yard Waste Collection

Yard waste includes grass clippings, weeds, leaves, tree trimmings, branches, shrub clippings, small roots, and other lawn trash. These materials are taken to the compost facility. Do not put household trash or animal waste into the yard trash cart. Cut all branches into 3-foot lengths and tie them into bundles for curbside collection. The weight of the bundle should not exceed 50 pounds.

Place leaves and clippings in plastic bags for collection. If your yard waste consists of grass, remove soil from the branches and cut the grass into smaller pieces to fit the plastic bags. This will help ensure that the waste is collected easily as part of the Yorktown Trash Schedule.
