Garbage Collections

Place all garbage into a city-issued garbage cart. If you have extra trash, put it in bags and place them next to your garbage cart. The weight of the cart must not exceed 50 pounds. Garbage collection begins at 6 AM, so place your cart by 5 AM on your collection day. You can also place your cart curbside after 7 PM the night before your scheduled collection day.

It is recommended to use only closed-lidded carts at the curbside. Do not overfill your cart, as overflowing trash can lead to missed collections. Position your cart in a place free from obstacles such as poles, mailboxes, and parked cars, which will allow automatic trash collection trucks to easily pick up your cart.

Leave a clearance of 4 feet on both sides of your cart when placing it. Do not place any non-household items, such as concrete, construction debris, yard waste, or bulk trash, into your garbage cart, as these items are not considered normal residential garbage. Roll your trash cart back by 12 PM on your collection day.

Recycling Collections

According to Huntington’s rules, recycling collection begins at 5 AM on your collection day, so place your recycling cart curbside before 5 AM. Only clean, empty, and dry items should be placed in your recycling cart to reduce spillage. Do not place any plastic bags into the recycling cart, as these are not recyclable and cause problems during processing.

Recycling materials are collected weekly. Acceptable materials include mixed papers, newspapers, magazines, mail, school papers, clean scrap paper, advertising circulars, cereal boxes (remove plastic liners), shoe boxes, toilet paper cores, paper towel cores, and flattened cardboard.

Other acceptable materials include glass jars, glass bottles, plastic bottles, and metal food and beverage cans. Do not add any non-recyclable material into your recycling cart, as it will lead to missed collection. Place all materials loosely in the cart.

Bulk Trash Collections

Bulk trash includes items weighing more than 50 pounds or that cannot fit into your residential garbage cart. Examples include furniture such as couches, sleeper sofas, mattresses, box springs, headboards, footboards, chairs, and sectional sofas (use duct tape to cover glass if necessary). Each piece is considered one bulk item. These materials require special handling. Residents can place up to four bulk trash items on every second garbage collection day of the week.

If your bulk trash includes mattresses, wrap them in plastic bags. If your bulk trash contains carpet, cut it into 4-foot lengths and roll it up before placing it at the curb. Similarly, cut railroad ties into 4-foot lengths before placing them curbside.

Yard Waste Collections

The city provides yard waste collection once a week, every Sunday. Residents can place up to 10 bags or bundles of yard trash at the curbside per collection. Exceeding this limit will result in missed collection, and homeowners will receive a notice to comply. Acceptable yard waste includes leaves, bundled branches, brush, plant trimmings, and tree limbs less than 5 inches in diameter.

Ensure yard waste is placed separately from household garbage to guarantee collection. Place your yard waste at the curb by 7 AM on your collection day. Follow the guidelines by cutting all branches into lengths of 3 feet and diameters of up to 3 inches, and tying them into bundles before placing them curbside.
