Residential Garbage Collection

Normal residential garbage pickup services in Sarasota County will be provided once a week. To ensure your garbage collection, start placing your carts at the curbside from 5 PM on the evening before your collection day to 6 AM on the morning of your collection day. Similarly, roll your cart back by 10 AM on the day following collection.

Place only closed-lid carts at the curbside to reduce litter on the street. Put all residential garbage into plastic bags and place those bags into the garbage cart. The weight of each bag should be 40 pounds, and if you exceed this limit, you will be charged an extra fee. Place your cart by leaving a distance of 3 feet from other carts.

Place your carts at the curb so that the lid faces the front of the street. Ensure your cart is in a place free from obstacles such as parked cars, poles, mailboxes, and even other carts, so the automatic truck can easily collect your cart. Store recycling, garbage, bulk, and yard trash separately. Try to store residential garbage in your home backyard for weekly collection.

Recycling Collection

The Waste Management Authority will provide recycling facilities on the same day as your normal garbage collection, so place your cart at the curbside from 5 PM on the evening before your collection day to 6 AM on the morning of your collection day. The Waste Management Department has been providing recycling services to the residents of Sarasota County since 1991.

When placing recyclables into the recycling cart, ensure that your recycling material is properly clean, empty, and dry to reduce litter and spillage in the recycling cart. Place all recycling items loosely into the recycling cart and do not put any plastic bags into the recycling cart. Plastic bags disrupt recycling processes and slow down the recycling process.

Acceptable recycling materials include aluminum and steel cans (empty and rinsed), food and beverage cartons (empty, rinsed, and with caps replaced), bottles and jars (empty, rinsed, and with caps replaced), mixed paper, paperboard, newspaper, magazines, and kitchen, laundry, and bath bottles and containers. Do not add any irrelevant materials into the recycling cart.

Bulk Trash Collection

Residents of Sarasota are allowed to place bulk trash at the curbside on the same day as their normal garbage collection. If you have bulk trash and want to get rid of it, place it at the curbside on your normal garbage collection day. Bulk trash includes bathroom fixtures, barbecue grills, carpet, furniture, push lawn mowers (remove the oil and gas), and wooden pallets no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet.

Some bulk trash is oversized and needs special handling, such as basketball poles, bathtubs, carpets (rolls longer than 4 feet), Christmas trees (more than 6 feet tall), construction debris exceeding four 32-gallon containers, exercise equipment, garage doors and openers, glass windows and tabletops, mirrors, and king-size mattresses. For these items, you need to inform the Waste Management Department about the type and size of your bulk trash.

Yard Waste Collection

The government will also provide curbside yard waste collection facilities to the residents of Sarasota County. Yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, shrub trimmings, palm fronds, small tree limbs, and branches. If you want to avail of yard pickup services, you will need to inform the Solid Waste Department by calling 941-861-5000.

Place your yard trash at the curbside by following proper rules and regulations, such as placing all leaves and clippings into bags and cutting all branches into lengths of 6 feet and diameters of 12 inches. Tie all these cut branches into a bundle and place it at the curbside on your yard collection day.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

The county will also provide curbside household hazardous waste (HHW) collection services. You will need to call the Waste Management Department to schedule your household hazardous material collection. HHW includes chemicals, chargeable batteries, fuel and tanks, fluorescent lights, medications, miscellaneous items, paints, motor oil, needle disposal, and free sharps containers.
